This story opens with Margaret, a wife, mother and grandmother to what appears to be the perfect nuclear family. She's married to Artie, has two daughters, Julia and Sydnie and some grandchildren. The story unfolds prior to a dinner party for the family at Julie’s gorgeous immaculate home with everything planned to the T by Julia, like everything else she does; perfection is her goal.
Over a relatively short period of time, the reader gets an inside look at the inner thoughts and feelings of the main characters. The grandchildren also carry secrets and are often overshadowed by the adults in the room leaving little time for them to be as open with their parents as perhaps they would like. Thus, cracks in the family show at all levels.
Artie does not show up at the dinner party throwing everything in disarray and suddenly hidden secrets are revealed. Can this family ever recover and live with what was and what will be? Will their relationships strengthen with this understanding?
I loved the book and the writing style! The characters somehow pull you in from the very beginning. There is something in each one that is relatable and traits that drive the reader to want to know more. The characterization is one of the best I have read. Because of the understanding the writing gives to the inner workings of the women, it aids in understanding the complexities and dynamics of their relationships.
The descriptions, as the story unfolds, are written in a way you can easily picture who these people are, what they are seeing and a sense of their true persona, not the projected one.
The twists in the story show the ripples and cracks in the individuals and how this plays out in the family. Each one is a piece of the puzzle. To feel whole, they need to not only get real with themselves but with each other. These women struggle to attain that. The goodness and happiness they desire can only happen, aka the light, when they become authentic to each other and to themselves.
********I look forward to future reads by this author!
